Title: like the angel heaven let me think was you
Rating: R
Fandom: Heroes
Pairing: Mohinder/Elle
Characters: Mohinder Suresh, Elle Bishop (Molly Walker, Matt Parkman)
Word Count: 1736
Spoilers: Right through to 2x11 "Powerless".
Summary: bob brushes you off and says something about elle working with you in the lab.
Note: Day thirteen of my 25 Fics In 25 Days Challenge. Written for midnightxgarden, who requested Elle/Mohinder to the prompt "She knows what he doesn't; not anyone can fall like he wants to believe" which unfortunately didn't come into play at all. I think you all know I suck at keeping to guidelines. Sorry!
Warnings: implied sexual content, mild swearing.

After the incident with Sylar, you determinedly tell Bob you won’t be going on any more field assignments no matter what he says; but he shrugs you off and says it doesn’t matter as Elle has been benched. You ask why (she helped us!) but Bob brushes you off and says something about Elle working with you in the lab until she’s deemed fit to go back out into the field. You want to protest – not only do you have a feeling she’ll just get in your way, but when you said you didn’t want to go on any more field assignments what you meant was you didn’t want to work at all, you just want to take Molly and hide away from the rest of the world. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards, so you nod and take your leave.

Maybe it won’t be too bad (yeah right).

Within minutes of Elle entering the lab the next day, she’s broken two beakers and somehow managed to melt the countertops. She smiles at you sheepishly, ducking her head in a way that you can’t help but find endearing.

“Sorry doctor, I guess I just don’t mix too well with this sort of thing,” she tells you wryly, and you can’t help but smile back despite the annoyance twisting in your gut.

“Yes, well, never mind that – I’m sure your father will have the counters fixed in no time,” you say and she snorts with a roll of her eyes. “I can’t concentrate anyway. Why don’t we go get some tea?”

Elle pulls a face, “I’m more of a black coffee girl, but sure.”

So you follow her to the break room and as you both drink your beverages of choice she asks about Molly and you take a moment to indulge yourself in mindless chatter. And it’s actually…nice.

Later, you try not to think to hard about just how nice it was. She’s your boss's daughter after all – your boss who may or may not be a bad guy and well honestly, you’re pretty sure she’s completely insane.

A week later you find you’ve settled into a sort of routine. Elle mostly just sits around the lab, snapping gum and reading magazines, stopping only to pass you bits and pieces when you ask for them. But every morning she brings you tea when she arrives, and you always share whatever lunch you’ve brought from home (which is generally just leftovers from whatever you’ve cooked the night before, since Matt still can’t even make a sandwich without breaking something).

Occasionally she’ll glance up and smile at you, and sometimes she’ll ask you what are you doing today? or how’s Molly’s grades going? or what’s Officer Parkman up to these days? and you’ll stop staring into microscopes or typing away at the computer to answer her questions as well as you can.

One day she glances up and asks, “so Suresh, do you have any plans tonight?” and your hand slips and drops the slide you’re holding. You blush pinker then the shirt you’re wearing and your tongue feels so heavy in your mouth that you can’t seem to breathe. But then she just grins and winks and goes back to her magazine like nothing even happened.

And that’s when you know she’s the most sadistic person you’ve ever met.

She follows you home one evening, not unlike a stray puppy. You’ve just gotten into the apartment and Molly’s still in your arms when she knocks on the door and asks what’s for dinner, as if she was meant to be there.

She and Molly chatter over dinner as if they’ve been best friends their whole lives – which isn’t too surprising since she is quite like an overgrown child in so many ways. Matt shares edgy glances with you, but politely answers questions about the police department and even makes a joke or two which she laughs riotously at.

When everybody’s finished their meal, you clear the plates off the table and she wanders off with Molly to watch some ridiculous Disney show that always gives you a headache while Matt goes to get ready to work the graveyard shift. You’re halfway through scrubbing off the dishes when she slips up behind you and plants a surprisingly soft kiss to your cheek.

“Thanks doc,” she murmurs in your ear; and then she’s turning back towards the door and waving jovially at Molly. The door clicks shut and you see stars behind your eyes.

There’s a pink post-it note beside your tea the next morning. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be afraid about liking it; they all do in time is scrawled on it with a big smiley face drawn next to it. You scrunch it up and throw it in the bin, but it haunts you all day as you wonder where she is.

She’s limping a little when she comes into the lab the next day, but she still manages to smile at you, albeit somewhat shakily.

“I guess your father let you back on field duty then,” you comment as you reach out to help her to her usual spot perched on the far counter, and she rolls her eyes at your word.

“Not exactly,” she mutters and you can tell something’s happened but she clearly doesn’t want to share it with you so you simply rub her shoulder and go back to your work.

She disappears again the next day, and doesn’t come back for a week after that. When you finally see her again, she’s on your doorstep and her eyes are stormy. She shoulders past you and you grunt and hope she doesn’t wake Molly, but she simply takes a seat at the kitchen table and sits in stony silence. You hesitate before moving to make her a coffee and then take the seat across from her. She sips from the mug (the words ‘world’s best dad’ printed on the side, not unlike the apron Molly brought Matt as a joke) and then finally sighs heavily and meets your eyes.

“Bennet told me things. Things I wish I hadn’t have asked about,” she tells you. And you frown because you haven’t seen Noah Bennet in over a week and you’re sure Elle can’t have seen him, not since she’s been with you – she’s not allowed to interact with the 'guests' anymore. She seems to notice your confusion because she continues, “it was a while back, the day Sylar attacked.” and now it makes more sense.

She sighs again, taps her fingers against the wood of the table. “What did you ask?” you inquire. She hesitates.

“I asked about the tests my father did on me. I-I found out everything. He made me forget, but I remember it all now,” she whispers, and your heart clenches and your stomach sinks. You hoped thought that Bob was doing everything for good, but this sounds wrong.

“What – what did he do?” you ask quietly, and her eyes are downcast again as her fingers start to entwine nervously together.

“He would shock me with electricity to see how much I could take. And there were other things,” she shrugs and you want to vomit but you have a feeling if you’re any less than completely strong, she’ll just run away. So you reach out and take her hand, and she glances at you. She looks tired and worn out and something else that doesn’t seem right.

“I have to tell you something,” she says and you squeeze her hand reassuringly.

“You can tell me anything,” you insist, and she glances away. Guilty – that’s what she looks.

“I used Molly,” she glances back at you now, eyes hard, and you want to shake her and scream at her and hold her tight and kiss her senseless, and now you’re just torn, so fucking torn. “I asked her to find Claire Bennet. And I went to Claire and bartered her family’s freedom and gave her back her dad for some of her blood. That’s how I remembered everything – her blood healed the part of my brain that the Haitian damaged.” And now you’re also torn in asking how she knew it’d do that and you want to find out more because you’re a scientist – but she needs you and you can’t be mad over her asking Molly to find Claire because hell, Matt did the same thing to find his father.

So you simply ask, “what are you going to do?” and she shakes her head, “I don’t know.” Long moments pass and she just sips her coffee as you watch the walls. Eventually she gets up and moves to the sink to place the mug in there, and then you’re on your feet and behind her, your hands lying gently on her hip.

“You could stay here. You could tell your father you’re leaving and stay with us. We can protect you,” you say, and she’s turning around with a sad smile and shaking her head.

“I couldn’t put Molly in danger, or you or Officer Parkman.” And then you’re leaning forward and kissing her and wondering what the fuck you’re doing because this is still wrong no matter what the circumstances. She’s your boss’s daughter and she’s sadistic and insane and she kisses like she’s been doing it her whole life. Static rises between you and she slides a hand up your chest and wraps it into your hair, leaving trails of electricity in her wake.

“You shouldn’t be doing this. I’m a mess,” she mumbles when she pulls slightly back, but you don’t care because you are too. You just pull her closer and she hooks a leg around you and then there aren’t any more words spoken for the rest of the night.

There’s a pink post-it note beside a cup of tea on your nightstand when you wake up the next morning. She can find me if you ever have any problems. If you decide to switch sides again, I left the security codes to get to all the files my father has hidden with Noah Bennet. You can trust him is scrawled on it with a big smiley face next to it. You smile, fold it up, and place it in the drawer of the nightstand. You have a call to make.

This is fabulous! Really! Its dark and emotion fuelled and I love it. I'm not the worlds biggest Mohinder fan but this is fantastic! You're Elle is brilliant, the way she plays with Molly and watches is Disney is cute (even if she did have alterior motives) and so Elle-like.

Also, I've made your Christmas present. Do you want me to attact it to a comment or post it in my lj whenever I make a post next?

This fic is so gorgeous; I love all of the little notes that Elle leaves Mohinder, and the smiley faces on them. They really seem like something she'd do. The little mentions of Matt and Molly felt spot-on as well.

ps. I think your post on heroes_fic has an incorrect link: it led me to http://community.livejournal.com/fadedpaper/105363.htm at first instead of this page.

That was really fascinating!
I loved reading it!
There was such beauty in your description and it was really nicely written, very believable and I thought that Elle could totally act like this!
And I loved that line, I could really see it in my head and it is so true about Molly:
She and Molly chatter over dinner as if they’ve been best friends their whole lives – which isn’t too surprising since she is quite like an overgrown child in so many ways.
